My rendition of Vertigo's Lucifer, born in the pages of Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman', then the lead of his own Vertigo series 'Lucifer' by Mike Carey. Both brilliant series from brilliant writers that I keep rereading. I loved how this version of 'the Devil' considered the notion of 'evil' as meaningless as that of 'good'.

(Why is it the british/irish writers seem the best at using judeo-christian universes in philosophically interesting and complex ways? Gaiman, Carey, Ellis, Moore, Ennis... Just wondering. Anyway....)

I remember reading that Neil Gaiman instructed artists that Lucifer should basically look like David Bowie, whose engimatic, adrogynous looks make him a great inspiration for such things of course. I didn't just want to make a Bowie portrait though. Sometimes that can lead to a piece looking like 'celeb-doing-cosplay'. I wanted to paint Lucifer...and used Bowie as a template. A starting point.

Not sure how well I succeeded, but it sure was fun. Think I'll do more Vertigo characters.
