Rise of Chtulhu by ArcosArt Rise of Chtulhu by ArcosArt
This is from late 2009, my first big piece completely digitally painted with the Wacom Pen. I actually made it a little too big. Most of the details are lost now, but it was great fun.

Who knows why we all love Cthulhu so much, but we do, don't we? Is it the name? The giant squid face? The fact that he's not in some other dimension but sleeping at the bottom of the ocean, and could rise among us any second??

Personally, I think it's the squidface...

(What's his competition? Yog-Sothoth? "a conglomeration of glowing bubbles"? Don't think so!)

PS:Two people actually told me they had this piece tattooed on their bodies, which I consider quite a compliment! ;)

Hi! We're a group of journalism students from Spain, and our final year project consists of a RPG magazine. We would use your drawing to illustrate an article about Cthulhu. Would you agree to cooperate with us? The drawing will only be used for the article and will not be used for any commercial purpose.
You can send us the image and your permission to: revista.enrolate@gmail.com
Thank you very much for you attention.

well done great composition, I love the tension in the hand and the movement in the piece. You did a great job of giving Cthulhu weight and scale in the work!

I like to try to actually compliment something or offer an actual critique versus just saying " I like it..."

Absolutely, although ironically enough the indescribable horrors of Cthulhu can never be depicted:P My favorite might be this one, which you have probably seen: [link]

I know I've already commented and faved this (a long time ago), but I've been thinking...the squid-face is definitely part of his mass appeal, but I think it's the combination of squid-face and beer-gut that really hits home with a lot of people. This squid-face/beer-gut combo kinda makes Cthulhu seem (to me) like everyone's big uncle Couch Potato. He does a lot of sleeping and lounging around, but once he wakes up...all hell breaks loose. :ohnoes:

I think Nyarlathotep might be some good competition, though. He too has a wide appeal. The ladies love the deceptively handsome demonic bad-boy side of him, and the dudes love his pure badassery and win. And the guy is a master shape-shifter, and he has a tentacle for a face. A tentacle for a face. A tentacle. For. A face. Really, only Lovecraft could have come up with that crazy shit.

Heheh too true! I'll probably get around to Nyarlathotep, but right now I'm actually working on Chaughnar Faugn. We'll see if the beer-gut combined with semi-elephant face and mouth-trunk can beat Cthulhu in appeal. (Although Cthulhu seems to be the main man of the Lovecraft verse these days) ;)

I always imagined him as a large, shapeless squid faced kind of stump monster with smaller wings. this works too :)
I vote the shoggoths as better competition, as they're quite active, living in the antarctic, and apparantly so ghastly that they drove someone insane with a glance.

Of course then if people see my art and don't go insane, I will have failed by default, hehe. Still it's a challenge. Hmm, maybe I'll do Chaughnar Faugn first...
